The Latin binomial for the Tender Nesting Polypore, Hapalapilus rutilans, means "soft, reddish cap." It's certainly soft and easy to tear, but the color is more cinnamon. These can get large (15 cm), but the ones photographed here were under 7 cm. The pores are angular and typically 3 per millimeter. This mushroom is saprotrophic on hardwood. The most distinctive feature is the lovely magnenta KOH reaction (last photo). Syn. Hapalopilus nidulans.
I've heard this mushroom is poisonous. I've also heard that wool dyers use it to produce a purple dye.
